INTRODUCTION
The DMI Zwolle factory is a highly specialized operation for the application of galvanic layers to a wide range of industrial components. DMI processes are developed with the objective of enhancing the life and operating efficiencies of these components by applying the appropriate combination of surface treatments and finishes.

HISTORY
Started as Van Der Horst, still a well known name in the international hard chrome plating world, the company was bought in 1979 by Lockwood Torday and Carlisle.
In 1990 a group of companies was brought together under one common identity and Diesel Marine International was formed.
This group now comprises a world-wide organization of factories, licensees and agents, active in the field of a wide variety of surface treatments as well as reconditioning and supply of diesel engine components.

R&D
DMI places a great emphasis on the control of its specialist surface engineering and finishing processes and maintains its own chemical laboratory and calibration service.
DMI works together with specialised research institutes in the Netherlands for further improvement or solutions for specific requirements related to wear and corrosion.

PROCESSES

Nickel Plating
Electroplating nickel, a galvanic process, on industrial components gives a good resistance against chemical attack. The applied layer does not show porosity, which therefore prevents the component material from corroding due to the, sometimes, harsh environment in which the component has to operate.
Nickel can be deposited on a wide range of materials such as construction steel, stainless steel, copper etc.
Apart from corrosion resistance, nickel is also used for the rescue of already corroded surfaces since it has the ability to bridge fine porosity in the base material.
However the main application of nickel is as an intermediate layer for industrial hard chrome.

Hard Chromium Plating
Electroplating hard chromium, also a galvanic process, on industrial components gives a good resistance against wear and provides low friction and non-stick properties. Furthermore the micro-crack pattern in the layer greatly improves the tribological properties.
Hardchrome has a hardness of approx. 900 – 1000 HV. and can be applied on a wide variety of metals.
Since a hard chrome layer has a natural fine porosity it does not completely seal-off the base material. In case the operational environment of the component could cause corrosion the combination of a nickel and a hard chrome layer is used. The nickel layer will seal-of the base material and the hard chrome layer will provide its specific properties. The combination of 60 micron of nickel and 40 micron of hard chrome can be regarded as a standard layer. However for harsher environments thicker layers can be applied.
A very specific application of a hard chromium layer is the use on press dies for the automotive industry. A very thin layer of chromium on dies gives the operator huge economical advantages. The use of large amounts of lubrication oil is no longer required so avoiding the subsequent costs for removing it. A vast reduction of chemically polluted waste water is also achieved. Further benefits include reduced press down time, improved material flow in the die and high resistance against wear, which results in a longer operation time, improved panel quality and reduced rework and scrap levels.

Lead Plating
A lead coating has its own specific benefits. The lead coating is absolutely pore free and seals therefore the base material from corroding. Furthermore is has a high chemical resistance and a high resistance against erosion. However it cannot withstand higher temperatures.
Specific applications are the inside of water-cooled components through which a chemical polluted gas is flowing with a high velocity.

Metal Spraying

Spraying
DMI can offer a wide variety of sprayed layer applications. Available are conventional spraying including HVOF, with numerous metals and ceramics.

Welding
During the years DMI has developed and is using various welding techniques and materials. Our vast experience is based on applications used for components for ships diesel engines. The techniques and materials used have to withstand the aggressive environment in the combustion chamber. Some of the properties of these materials are resistance against high temperatures and wear. Also very hard materials are applied.
