DMI are the world leaders in
the hard chromium plating of automotive press dies.
Since introducing the process into Europe in 1989, DMI have processed over
10,000 parts for the Automotive and Plastics Industries.
With nine locations world-wide and further expansion planned, DMI offer the most
comprehensive service available.
The DMI process of hard chrome plating offers a wide range of benefits
|
Reduced Wear DMI chromium is 3 to 4 times harder than cast iron. This, when combined with the low co-efficient of friction and anti-stick characteristics of DMI hard chromium, result in a much higher resistance to wear. The average life of the chrome layer is in the region of 300,000 parts. |
Wear Indicator Over the life of the tool, the chrome thickness can be monitored and, prior to significant wear of the base material, the chrome can be removed and the tool re-chromed to it's original profile thus eliminating the need for reprofiling of the tool and the need for time consuming and expensive tryout. |
|
Reduced Lubricant The low co-efficient of friction and anti-stick characteristics of chromium allows the drawing operation to take place without the need for lubrication thus significantly reducing or eliminating the cost, handling, environmental and disposal problems associated with draw lubricant. |
Reduced Pimpling The anti-stick property of chromium resists the adhesion of zinc and contaminants during the drawing process. Loose particles are removed by the panel rather than adhering to and building up on the surface of the tool. Major savings in scrap, rework and press down time are achieved. |
|
Stable Surface Condition The chromium layer provides a stable and consistent surface thus eliminating a major variable in the press process. |
Fast Turn Round Dies are processed in 72 hours or better and are returned press ready. |
|
Die Materials The DMI process can be applied equally well to cast irons with or without nickel based weld repairs and tool steel inserts and to tool steel and steel dies. |
Panel Materials The DMI process provides significant benefits on a wide range of blank materials including coated and uncoated steels , aluminium and stainless steel. |
|
Reduced Cost of New Tooling Lower grades of cast iron can be used to manufacture tools. These are much less expensive, have shorter lead times and are easier to machine. |
New Tools and Old Tools The benefits of DMI hard chromium are achieved on old as well as new tools. |

The benefits of the DMI process of
hard chromium plating of press dies has been analysed,
quantified
and evaluated by many of our customers. |
